Learn a language in the native country and add some extracurricular fun with these holiday courses that offer a skill or some culture, too. Mandarin and various activities, China

Four hours of lessons a day plus the benefit of one-to-one level assessment and study plan is the deal at the Hutong School’s Mandarin courses in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. Omilo runs Greek courses in Athens and Nafplion, and on the islands of Syros and Lefkada. The latter is perhaps the most appealing: classes take place 200 metres from the beach in the village of Agios Nikitas on the west coast. A week’s course includes 24 hours of lessons over six days and at least four activities. Strangely, students must be 26 or over. Japanese and pop culture, Fukuoka

Cactus has courses in 120 destinations in Fukuoka. Lessons are from 9.30am—2.30pm, Monday to Friday, and cover movies, music, TV and books as well as the Japanese language. Optional extras include studying tea ceremonies, calligraphy, Japanese food and other customs. French and horse-riding, Provence

CESA has great courses based at a mansion in Aix-en-Provence. Two weeks of French lessons

“Where did the Christmas basket sitting on our front porch come from? ” I thought to myself. I’d just returned from the bank, where I’d withdrawn enough cash to get us through the holidays. Life was a struggle, raising two teenagers as a single mom while working two part-time jobs and taking college courses at night. I was extremely tired.

Looking for a card or note, I searched the basket which was filled with all sorts of holiday foodstuffs. However, there was none. Had someone entered my name into a charity? The timing couldn’t have been better. It would support us through a period of difficult time.

At that very moment I felt a bit guilty (内疚). Wasn’t there someone else out there who needed it more? Yes, my kids and I were struggling, but my grandparent relied only on the state pension (国家抚恤金) to get by. At least I could always pick up extra hours at work. And when

3

I finished my degree, things would improve a lot.

My conscience (良心) won the debate. I drove to Grandma and Grandpa’s little two-room house. Grandma opened the door. “Merry Christmas, Grandma!” I said, handing the Christmas basket to her. Grandma was thrilled. “Oh, thank you, Connie! We’ll be able to have such a nice dinner this Sunday. This will really help us until our pension come. But what about you?” “We’ll be fine,” I said. After a short visit I excused myself. “I still have a lot of work to do, so I should head back.”

On the way home, thinking about Grandma’s smile, I knew the basket had gone to the right place. But like Grandma said, what about us? I still worried about how I could afford to make Christmas special for my kids. Then I saw it in front of my house, in the same spot as before — an identical Christmas basket, every bit as lovely as the first. 1 .What kind of life did the author live according to the passage? And when I finished my degree, things would improve a lot.

The history of the flying car is almost as old as that of powered flight itself. It started with the Curtiss Autoplane of 1917, an awkward-looking machine with removable wings. It never left the ground. Later machines made it into the skies but failed to take off commercially. Money is now pouring into flying taxis. On March 30th Lilium, a German company that develops them, announced a merger with SPAC, an acquisition company that values it at $3. 3 bn -- a sign that investors think the business will fly.

Thanks to better batteries and lightweight materials, some of them are ready to carry passengers. Up to 300 firms are working on short-range battery-powered craft that take off and land vertically. Carmakers, tech companies and others are investing money into the field. The government is offering a glide path to certification. America's Federal Aviation Administration is engaged in the process with around 30 firms, says Natasha Santha of LEK, a consulting company.

Midway between a cab and a helicopter, flying taxis have distinct advantages over both. Quiet electric motors allow them to operate frequent services. They require only a patch of concrete to land, unlike noisy helicopters, which face severe operating restrictions in most cities. They can fly four or five times faster than a cab can drive and do not get stuck in traffic. Prices can be kept low by ride-sharing. Joby, based in California, says its five-seater machine will enter commercial service in 2024. The firm calculates the initial cost of around $4 per person per mile may soon fall by 25%. A trip from Manhattan to JFK airport would then cost $30-40 per passenger.

7

The real revolution will come when full autonomy takes out the cost of a pilot. Archer hopes to run such aircraft by 2028. They face fewer obstacles in the air than earth-bound cars do on the road; airliners mostly fly on autopilot as it is. Still, as one industry insider puts it, it is probably best to accustom passengers and regulators to airborne taxis before getting rid of the driver. 1 .What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A.The flying car can date back to the 1920s.

B.Investors see the potential of the business of the flying car. C.The flying car never left the ground successfully in history. D.A German company has launched a new flying car into the market. 答案:B

2 .What does \"offering a glide path\" in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? A.Giving the green light. C.Presenting legal guidance. 答案:A

3 .Which of the following is the strength of flying taxis? A.Costing as little as cabs. C.Reducing air pollution. 答案:B

4 .What can be inferred about the flying taxis from the last paragraph? A.They will develop faster than cars.

B.Passengers will quickly get used to taking them.

8

B.Providing timely assistance. D.Conducting strict management.

B.Saving passengers from the traffic jam. D.Having no operating restrictions.

C.The regulators will take measures to promote them. D.Autopilot flying taxis will probably replace those with pilots. 答案:D 【答案解析】

The world’s first urban airport specifically for flying cars and drones(无人机) will be developed under government-backed plans to cut road congestion(拥堵)and pollution. The zero-emission airport, to be called Air One, will be built in Coventry later this year to allow small electric passenger-carrying aircraft to operate in an urban area. It will initially open in November in a month-long demonstration a part of events to mark Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture.

Urban- Air Port, the London-based aerospace company which is behind the facility, said it

planned to eventually build more than 200 airports in cities around the world, with rooftops and floating platforms being used to locate them as close to urban centres as possible. Flying cars-effectively large. passenger - carrying drones- are not currently permitted to operate in UK airspace. However, the European Aviation Safety Agency has started a consultation on the issue and hopes that permission will be given in a few years to allow\" electric vertical lake -off and landing vehicles\"to operate commercially.

The technology is seen as quieter, lighter, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than helicopters, allowing people to take short journeys between city centres rather than relying on the increasingly congested road network.

Ricky Sandhu, founder and executive chairman of Urban - Air Port, said the new facility would give flying cars a place to land, take-off and charge their batteries. \"It will bring clean urban air transport of zero emission to the masses, \" he added . \" Most of our cities are crowded urban centres where space is limited and you may not find sufficient space on the ground so rooftops can be important. \" The ultimate aim was to build the airports on rooftops and on offshore platforms.

Passage seven

When I was only 3 years old, my mother taught me to memorize and recite poems. She was my first teacher of the arts, and my father was the first to appreciate my performance. Even at that young age, I had a simple understanding of how art and culture affect us as human beings and how we can connect to each other through the arts, which shapes my life to this day. When I was growing up, my parents supported my interest in taking acting classes and doing community theater. Their faith in me and the professional training I was getting from my theater teachers gave me a sense of purpose and a sense of self-confidence. I learned what artistic achievement actually was and what hard work the business was. Although many people see the rosy picture to our business, I was really learning what it would require for me to become a professional.

I became an actress, but arts education isn’t just about preparing our young people for a job in the arts. I recently talked to some of the kids attending theater education. Some of them want to work in theater, and some don’t. They are learning not only theater skills, but also about the world around them. They learn about discipline(纪律) and hard work and what’s required and what they have to do to bring themselves to the work. They learn how they can be of service in the world through the arts. They learn how to work with a team. By studying the arts, these students are open to worlds and lives that they might not have any other way of knowing about or any other way to connect with in their lives the way they are right now.

These young people are our future. We are passing the torch to them. And I think that’s one of the most important reasons why we need to foster(培养) the arts. 1 .When the writer was 3 years old, she ________.

21

A.learned many kinds of arts B.did well kin communication

C.had a deep understanding of arts D.recited poems to her father 答案:D

2 .What does the underlined word “rosy” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.funny. 答案:B

3 .According to Paragraph 3, which of the following statements is TRUE? A.Discipline and hard work are not included in arts education. B.Students studying the arts should travel around the world. C.Attending theatre education does the kids much good. D.Arts education can only prepare the youth for jobs in the arts. 答案:C 【答案解析】

【详解】

词意猜测题。上文提到父母对我的信任,以及我从戏剧老师那里得到的专业培训,让我有了目标和自信心。我了解了艺术成就到底是什么,以及这个行业是艰苦的工作。根据“Although many people see the rosy picture to our business, I was really learning what it would require for me to become a professional.”句中Although与上下句意思可知,此处指许多人只看到了艺术行业的美好前景,却并不知道其中的艰苦及为之付出的努力。rosy指“美好的,明亮的”,故选B。 【详解】

细节理解题。根据第三段“They are learning not only theater skills, but also about the world around them. They learn about discipline(纪律) and hard work and what’s required and what they have to do to bring themselves to the work. They learn how they can be of service in the world through the arts. with the cake at the local bakery. As I wandered in front of the grocery store next to the bakeshop, I noticed a young woman standing at the store entrance with bags of groceries neatly piled. As is my practice with strangers, I made eye contact with her and said with a smile, “Hello, there! And how are you today?”

She smiled back and responded with a Southern accent. I had only taken a few steps past her when I heard her say, “Thank you for seeing me!”

Still smiling, I turned around and walked over to her. For the next twenty minutes, I listened attentively to Dominique sharing her story. She had grown up in Louisiana. Three years ago, she moved to California alone, where without contacts or the promise of employment, she struggled to create a life of purpose and fulfillment. She spoke with an easy Southern charm and a smile with joy.

A friend of hers came to pick her up. I helped her load the groceries into the back seat of the car. She thanked me and opened the front passenger-side door. \"My daddy used to say that a person will remember how you made them feel long after they've forgotten what you said. I know I'll remember this for a long time.” I smiled, knowing I would as well.

One of my favorite quotes is from Mother Teresa: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” I have found that the benefit of doing these small things not only helps me maintain a positive outlook on life but may even sow a few seeds of hope for someone else.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always expect one another to speak and act honestly.

Generosity means sharing and makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Instead, you have to learn how to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to friends. They tell your friends what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friends know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with problems. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend for help can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better. No two friendships are completely alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding. 1 .Some friendships don’t last long because ________.
